Pure Finnish wilderness, far from the tourist crowds

Many of Finland’s best-known destinations are busy with big tour groups and coach parks. This national park is different. It is one of Finland’s most unique natural areas, yet it stays quiet and unhurried. Here you hear the wind in the pines, the crunch of your own steps and the call of a Siberian jay, not the noise of a crowd.

The nature here is so pure that our guides fill their own drinking water straight from the clear forest ponds when they head out on the trail.

This is a private tour for your group only. You set the pace, ask as many questions as you like, and experience the silence of the Finnish wilderness the way locals do.

A national park shaped by the Ice Age

Most Finnish forests are flat. Rokua is not. When the continental ice sheet melted thousands of years ago, it left behind a landscape found almost nowhere else in Finland: rolling sand ridges called eskers, deep kettle holes, tall pines and clear, still lakes. Its geological value has earned Rokua its status as a UNESCO Global Geopark.

Along the way we may visit some of the park’s most remarkable landmarks:

  • Pookivaara: the highest viewpoint in the area, with wide views over the forested landscape.

  • Syvyydenkaivo: one of Finland’s deepest kettle holes, formed during the Ice Age.

  • Lakeside trails: quiet paths along crystal-clear lakes and ponds.

The park is also home to plants and birds rarely seen in many parts of Finland. Heather and crowberry carpet the forest floor, and the curious Siberian jay often follows walkers along the trail.

Your day trip from Oulu, step by step

  1. Pick-up in Oulu: we collect you from your accommodation in central Oulu in the morning.

  2. Scenic drive: a little over an hour through the Finnish countryside takes us to the national park.

  3. Into the wilderness: your guide introduces the park’s nature and Ice Age history. We then explore different parts of the park by vehicle and on foot, on trails chosen in advance to suit the season, the weather and your group’s wishes.

  4. Campfire in a Finnish kota: we stop in a traditional wooden shelter built around an open fire. You enjoy Finnish snacks and hot drinks, warm up and take in the silence. This is how Finns themselves recharge in nature.

  5. Return to Oulu: in the afternoon we drive you back to your accommodation.

A wilderness experience in every season

Winter: the national park turns into a snowy wonderland of heavy-laden pines and untouched snow. We explore on snowshoes and provide warm winter clothing, so you stay comfortable all day.

Spring to autumn: the trails reveal the full variety of the park’s terrain and vegetation. The longer days let us venture deeper into the wilderness.
