Arctic Sea Ice Fishing on Oulu's Frozen Sea
Arctic Sea Ice Fishing is our most popular winter experience and our best-rated activity. The sea area of Oulu, located in the Gulf of Bothnia, transforms into a vast frozen landscape during the winter months. Surrounded by the peaceful Arctic scenery, you'll experience traditional Finnish ice fishing just minutes from Oulu city centre.
The fish-rich waters of the Gulf of Bothnia provide an excellent setting for ice fishing, and we usually catch fish on almost every trip.
Your experience begins at our Nallikari Experience Center, located directly on the shoreline in front of the frozen sea. Here, you'll change into warm thermal winter clothing before heading outside with your guide.
From Nallikari, we walk directly onto the frozen sea. The fishing location is typically only a 5–15 minute walk from our Experience Center. As the snow crunches under your feet and the frozen landscape opens around you, you'll experience the peaceful atmosphere of an Arctic winter morning on the sea.
If the weather is cold or windy, our guide sets up a heated tent on the ice, providing a warm and comfortable shelter from the elements. It is also possible to continue ice fishing from inside the heated tent.
Once we reach the fishing location, everyone gets the opportunity to drill their own fishing hole through the ice. Our experienced fishing guide will show you how to prepare the fishing rod, bait the hook and use small movements to attract fish beneath the ice.
We also use a sonar fish finder during the experience. The sonar allows you to see what is happening beneath the ice and watch fish approach and react to your lure – adding an exciting new dimension to traditional ice fishing.
No previous fishing experience is required. Our guides will teach you everything you need to know, so you can simply enjoy the excitement of fishing and the peaceful beauty of Oulu's frozen sea.
